Summer work = Art Club FUN!
Pierz switched athletic conferences last year and Art Club was asked to update our conference team signs hanging in the PAC Gym. This meant some summer fun! (However, there is no fun in art club - sorry) Student artists got together over two days to update the signs. Here's some of our work in progress...
Will try to post pictures later when the signs are installed in the gym! Check back later...
Garbage Cans
FINALLY got the stencils finished and the garbage cans painted! Special thanks to Mr. Gruber, who let us use the metal shop to spray paint over the weekend.
We felt a little like the artist Banksy with our spray paint and stencils!

Bowls!!
Showing off some of our finished bowls before Soup Supper event.
Glaze Day!
Glaze day is a momentous occasion for Art Club - for lack of a better phrase, it's our "Souper Bowl." We met Saturday, January 26 starting at 9 am to glaze 150 bowls. Students start by glazing the inside of the bowl and then choosing a compatible color for the outside. It's so fun seeing the unique glaze combinations that come about!
Beginning of Bowls 2019
Art Club has started making bowls for our 2019 Empty Bowls Soup Supper. 2019 will be the 7th Annual Event. Students use the press mold technique to form the clay then smooth out inside and outside. Our goal is to make and sell 150 bowls for our event on Wednesday, February 20, 2019. Look for more information on the event and more pictures of the finished bowls!
Celebrating Day of the Dead
Art Club and Spanish Club held the 3rd annual combined event of painting faces for Día de los Muertos. Day of the Dead, Nov. 2, is celebrated in central and southern Mexico as well as the United States. It is a time to honor loved ones who have died. Pictured on the right is Healy art teacher, Mrs. Underhill, with her tribute to Frida Kahlo de Rivera--the famous Mexican artist who used her art to explore questions of identity, post-colonialism, gender, class, and race in Mexican society.

Decorating the Garbage cans
Yes, you read that correctly... We're decorating the garbage cans! One of the goals of Art Club is to help improve our school and community through art. We're currently working on updating the decorations on the garbage cans, which had been painted by art club students a decade ago. Our designs are a little more contemporary and all include a positive message. We looked at some street artist's work (like Banksy!) to help us with our "graffiti" style designs.
Student artists started by looking up some positive quotes and sayings then created and cut stencils. Our next step is painting! |
HUGE Success!
Another successful soup supper in the books! Art Club had 150 bowls for sale Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at the 5th Annual Empty Bowls Soup Supper. At the end of the evening only, only 10 bowls remained! We sold over 140 bowls and raised $1440 for the Pierz Food Shelf and the Pioneer Packs Program. Well done!

Glaze Day!!
Art Club students got together Saturday, January 28 to glaze the 140 bowls that were created for the 2017 Soup Supper. About 20 students got worked as a team to glaze the bowls. No worries - there was no singing, dancing or having fun. Ready for the supper benefit Wednesday, February 22!
On a Roll with Empty Bowls
This year will be Art Club's 5th Annual Empty Bowls Soup Supper. In the first four years, we have raised and donated $4600 and we're looking forward to another great event.
Art Club students start making the bowls in the fall for our February event. We use the "press mold" technique - start with your bowl form, line with plastic wrap, press and smooth clay into the form then remove to smooth the outside of the bowl. Most important part is the top lip of the bowl - gotta have it smooth to sip out the last drops of soup! Our goal this year is to make and sell 150 bowls. We've never sold completely out, but we can dream, can't we?? |
Locker Signs
SHow your Love for Art Club!
10/17/16
Tonight we worked on our Art Club locker signs. Hard to beat last year's poster - "Art Club. We Make Stuff." This year, members cut out a cardboard paint palette and mixed some colors on it to make it look like it had been used for painting. Molly tried it out in her hand and said it didn't feel right, so maybe not totally authentic, but looks cool! Next, we had to decide how to label our club - white paper with black writing? NO! Black with silver is much cooler. The final touch was attaching a real paint brush. Hopefully not too heavy for the masking tape! It will be fun to see them hanging in the halls. Go Art Club! |
Freezing Face Paint and Henna
10/7/16
Homecoming festivities this year included Tailgating - a chance for school clubs and activities to show off! Art Club took advantage of this by coming up with some fun homecoming themed face paint designs and doing henna. It was so cold {insert "How cold was it, Mrs. Underhill?!?"} that by the end of the hour I felt like my fingers were frozen! Regardless, much fun was had by all! We felt fortunate to be part of the Tailgating event and the Pioneers brought home a homecoming V-I-C-T-O-R-Y!! |
