Our journey started by watching Pico Iyer's TED Talk "Where is Home?" In it, he addressed different aspects of home, including ancestry, country of birth, physical possessions, the place you are in the moment and even the place you dream of being. Home can be more than a physical place, it might not be a state, but a state of mind. |
Next, we did some brainstorming about the idea of HOME. Students came up with a variety of different ideas of what home meant to them. This decision is often the hardest for students: What should I make?? Many students choose ideas that are similar, but others really challenge themselves with a tricky concept. I really enjoy seeing students express their ideas in unique ways. After that, it was deciding media, size, what surface to work on. At this point in the year, students have been introduced to various drawing, painting, collage and printmaking techniques and materials and are allowed to work with (just about!) anything. |
