Eighth graders have been exploring painting and collage with an "Around the Room" activity inspired by art teacher Cynthia Gaub's lessons. For each activity, students are introduced to multiple materials, vocabulary and techniques within a certain material as a way to explore and "play!" With Paint Around the Room, students explored liquid tempera, tempera cakes, acrylic, liquid watercolor, pan watercolor, watercolor crayons and watercolor pencils. The goal was to discover the different qualities of each of the paints and practice mixing colors. For Collage Around the Room, student explored different collage materials such as construction paper, magazine, tissue paper and mixed media. With each collage, students were to focus on a different technique or vocabulary term, such as tearing, cutting, asymmetrical or symmetrical balance, geometric and organic shapes, focal point, layering, theme, or color schemes such as warm colors, cool colors, and monochromatic colors.
